Academic Procrastination and the Effect on Students' Results for ICT Students

Procrastinationhasbeenreportedasaprevalentphenomenoninthegeneralpopulation,affecting anumberofadults.Procrastinationinacademiamayhaveparticularlyseriouseffectsforstudents intertiaryeducation,whoseacademiclivesarecharacterisedbyfrequentdeadlines.Indeed,ithas beenshownthatuniversitystudentswhoratedhighonprocrastinationreceivedlowgrades(Tice &Baumeister,1997).Inthepresentstudy,therelationshipbetweenprocrastinationandacademic performanceoftertiaryeducationstudentsenrolledonanICTprogramwasinvestigated.Participants were186studentsenrolledfull-timeondegreeordiplomalevelqualificationswithintheICTprogram ataNewZealandtertiaryinstitution.Therewasevidencethatthesubmissiontimesofassessmentswere positivelyassociatedwiththemarksachieved.Also,ICTstudentswhosubmittedtheirassessments earlyappearedtoachievehighermarksthanthosewhosubmittedtheirassessmentsclosertoorafter thedeadlines.
